2010- Children and their Parents have the Opportunity to Get to Know a Boy with Autism in This New Children’s Release
Pedro’s Visit to the Aquarium
is released by author Rasheedah Saleem-Muhammad and illustrated by Crystal Harris
In many ways Pedro is a boy just like any other boy, he likes to write and play, watch cartoons and listen to pop music. But because Pedro has autism, sometimes he gets very excited and emotional about certain things and it’s difficult for him to calm down. Sometimes Pedro’s parents don’t like to take him out to places like the supermarket where there are lots of people. Soon, Pedro’s class is going on a field trip to the aquarium and his parents are worried that Pedro will get too excited in such a public place. In the days leading up to the field trip, Pedro’s teacher shows the class photographs of the aquarium and pictures of what they will see during their visit. The day finally arrives when Pedro and the other children visit the aquarium. During the visit, Pedro has one episode but luckily his teacher is able to calm him down by singing to him and patting his back. When they arrive back at school, Pedro’s parents are very happy to hear that he had a successful outing and realize that with small steps they can take Pedro on special trips too.
Pedro’s Visit to the Aquarium tells children and their parents a simple story about a very complex condition, autism. The reader will see that Pedro is like most other kids but his condition causes him to react in extreme ways to change and to certain situations, images or objects. After reading this book, children and parents alike will learn a little bit more about what life is like for people with autism and those who care for them. By learning certain techniques, parents and teachers can help kids like Pedro do ordinary things like go to the supermarket or even take a special trip to the aquarium.

Pedro is a seven year old boy who has been diagnosed with having autism. At times, Pedro’s disorder makes him become silly and emotional. When Pedro becomes emotional, it is difficult for adults to calm him down. When deciding to take him on various outings Pedro’s parents are sometimes embarrassed by his behavior. Therefore, they are afraid to send him with the class on a field trip to the aquarium.
